Welcome to this edition of the Brindiamo Brand Spotlight, where we uncover the intriguing stories behind some of the most captivating whiskey brands in the industry. Today, our focus is on Heaven’s Door Spirits, a brand that beautifully combines the musical talent of Bob Dylan with the expertise of seasoned spirits entrepreneurs. Let's dive into the origins, essence, and future of this unique whiskey brand.
The story of Heaven’s Door Spirits began back in 2015 when Bob Dylan decided to trademark the term ‘bootleg whiskey,’ drawing inspiration from his unreleased recordings. This bold move quickly caught the attention of Mark Bushala, the co-founder of Angel’s Envy. Intrigued by the idea, he wasted no time in reaching out to Dylan’s attorney with a proposal to create a truly unique whiskey brand.
Embracing collaboration as a fundamental value, the team partnered with esteemed master distillers and expert blenders to curate a collection of American whiskeys. The brand’s name, Heaven’s Door, pays homage to Dylan's iconic 1973 song “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”
“I wanted to create a collection of American Whiskey that, in their own way, tell a story. I’ve been traveling for decades, and I’ve been able to try some of the best whiskey spirits that the world has to offer. This is great Whiskey,” Bob Dylan shared, reflecting on the creation of the brand.
The bottles of Heaven’s Door whiskeys are just as artistic as the spirits they hold, featuring images of Bob Dylan’s iron gate sculptures crafted at his Black Buffalo Ironworks studio in Los Angeles. (The actual works of art often sell for over $200,000 to high-profile clients.)
Heaven’s Door Spirits offers a variety of meticulously crafted whiskeys, including four core expressions: Ascension - a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Revelation - a double-barreled blend of Tennessee Whiskeys and a Straight Indiana Rye, Refuge – a Straight Rye Whiskey, and Revival – a certified Kosher, Tennessee Bourbon.
Heaven’s Door also unveils exclusive limited edition whiskeys like the Decade Series, Master Blender’s Edition, single barrel selections, Highway 61 Blend, the Exploration Series, and the yearly Bootleg Series.
Heaven’s Door Spirits made its official debut in 2018 when Bob Dylan joined the project, teaming up with Spirits Investment Partners (SIP) of Chicago.
Looking to the future, Heaven’s Door Spirits has established a distillery in Pleasureville, Kentucky, situated just an hour outside of Louisville. The 160-acre property adjacent to a nature preserve, which includes an 18th century grist mill and cabins, producing small batches of bourbon since 2018, with, water drawn from two underground aquifers on-site.
The Heaven's Door Distillery at Six Mile Creek stands out as one of eight distilleries to earn the EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification, highlighting its commitment to sustainable practices and energy efficiency through measures like LED lighting, water recycling, and heat recovery technologies. Taken together, these efforts significantly reduce environmental impact especially compared to peer distilleries.
Heaven’s Door recently opened the doors to “The Last Refuge,” located in a 140-year-old church at 600 E. Market Street in Louisville. The Last Refuge is Heaven Door’s homage to American whiskey, with a towering 30’ high bar showcasing over 1,500 bottles of whiskey. When completed, the venue will boast nearly 5,000 bottles of American whiskey on display. In January, Heaven’s Door plans to open a retail store and unique tasting room next door to The Last Refuge. The tasting room draws inspiration from an East Village loft apartment and features a large collection of vintage vinyl records, a billiards table and the full repertoire of Heaven’s Door core collection and limited releases.
