Arguably one of the most significant mergers in the history of the drinks industry occurred in 1997 when two British companies, distiller Grand Metropolitan and brewer Guinness, joined forces to form a $33bn (£20.5) conglomerate – Diageo, now recognized as the world's largest drinks company.
